You are warmly invited to the opening reception of the exhibition The Worlds of Mandaean Priests, with a chance to view documentary films and hear an introductory talk by Professor Christine Robins.

Mandaeans, sometimes called Sabians, practise an ancient and endangered religion. Conflict in the Middle East has forced them out of their homelands in Iraq and Iran in ever greater numbers.

Although Mandaeans depend on their priests for preserving religious knowledge and performing complex rituals, fewer than 50 priests now remain worldwide.

This opening launches an exhibition of 35 photographs in the Street Gallery, documenting Mandaean rituals.  Also on display will be key objects relating to the Mandaean religion and rituals.  The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the university of Exeter and Leiden with support from the Arcadia Fund. They have interviewed priests, recorded key rituals and shot documentary films in the largest communities of Australia and Sweden.

There is no need to book to attend the opening reception but if you have any queries, please telephone 01392 724039.

The exhibition itself runs from 19 October until 22 December 2017. Find out more here
