Magic Lantern Spectacle

 Magic and the Muse

The Barnfield Theatre, - Barnfield Road, Exeter, Devon, EX1 1SN

12th January 2018 at 8pm

Since 2015 the University has been a leading partner in the ‘Million Pictures’ European research project investigating the history and usage of magic lantern slides in educational contexts, coordinated in the UK by Professor Joe Kember of the English Department. The project’s final research workshop takes place in Exeter on 11-12 January.

As part of the impact of this innovative and successful project, the public are now offered a rare opportunity to experience a spectacular magic lantern event in a public city-centre venue.

Magic and the Muse uses both original and specially-created lantern slides and a genuine Victorian triple lantern. Lanternists Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker, accompanied by live music from multi-instrumentalists Richard Navarro, Nicholas Thurston and Miriam Gould, will present a fantastic combination of music, performance and projection, including a rare demonstration of projection onto a ‘living screen’ using hand-painted slides once owned by the parents of the film actor Peter Sellers.

The venue is Exeter’s Barnfield Theatre (itself originally built as a lecture hall to accommodate lantern projection), at 8 p.m. on Friday 12 January.

Tickets are £14 (£12 concessions). Groups of 10 receive an extra ticket free.

Book online at or by phone on 01392 271808.
