free entry - no need to book

The City Gate Hotel - Lower North Street, Exeter, EX4 3RB

11th December 2017 from 7pm to 9pm

Running time: 2 hours

You are invited to join us for Exeter’s first Art History in the Pub.

Melissa Percival, Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at the University of Exeter will ask a series of questions to open a conversation about the role universities play fostering connections with different communities through public art.

What activities might stimulate and connect academic research, teaching, public and regional engagement? How can ‘the academy’ meaningfully engage with artists and members of the public who have no connection to academia? What are the pressures and obstacles (physical, psychological, ideological) that prevent collaborations and how open are universities to being disrupted themselves?

Risk-taking - a combination of fear and excitement- underpins many of these questions, and as such this first pub session is an invitation to fall (fail?) gently.

Art History in the Pub is a series of informal talks taking place around the UK. The talk will last for about 30 minutes, with a break for getting extra drinks, followed by general discussion.

Art History in the Pub is free and open to all. No need to book.

Organised in association with the Association for Art History.
