Multi Perspectival exhibition with photographs and stories by refugees, about their life and challenges living in the Porte de la Chappelle camp.

While volunteering at Port De La Chappelle camp, medical student and photographer Amy Lineham found a means to respond to mass media narratives about the refugee struggle, while providing a form of agency to those who live in a state of helplessness.

Giving out 15 disposable cameras to those she encountered in her time there, she enabled men there to tell stories of their lives, relationships and frustrations; 8 of these cameras made it back to form the current exhibition.

Each series involves giving participants a camera, 2 blank postcards and an explanatory sheet in their preferred language. Every story captures, in a remarkably personal way, the challenging life of those refugees who inhabit an all-male camp.

These pictures and written accounts measure the distance between the restricted lives of refguees stuck in legal limbo and the freedoms enjoyed by those who inhabit the city that surrounds them. Yet, that act of storytelling reveals a humanity that dissolves those artificial barriers.

Known as ‘La Bulle’ (the Bubble), Porte de la Chappelle is a large, over-flowing refugee camp in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. An all-male camp, it is often only a temporary staying place for those who live there before they are evacuated to alternative locations. In this way, those who live there do so in makeshift way with an awareness for how quickly things can change.

This exhibition is presented in Exeter by the University of Exeter Student Action for Refugees Society (STAR).
