# Introduction

Leeside was a creative collaboration between [Natural England](https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/natural-england "Natural England") and its Protected Site Strategies and Arts and Culture, University of Exeter, taking place between November 2024 - July 2025. This initiative supported creative practitioners to explore nature rich [Sites of Specific Scientific Interest](https://naturalengland-defra.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/Defra::sites-of-special-scientific-interest-england/ "Sites of specific scientific interest")  with a broad range of stakeholders, bringing together University of Exeter research academics, Natural England officers and a range of local communities to undertake creative explorations of the protected sites and their surroundings and generate engaging creative outputs. 

Impact and legacy were key priorities for the commissions, with the intended outcome of encouraging community empowerment for future engagement in the management of protected sites, and informing relevant policy around protected site strategies.

One site selected was the Camel Estuary in Cornwall. This commission was awarded to filmmakers Xenia Glen and Antosh Wojcik of [Sleepwalker Studios](https://www.sleepwalkerstudios.co.uk/ "Sleepwalker Studios").  They explored the Camel Estuary’s cultural and environmental heritage in their film, *Camel Before The Storm*.

# About the site: The Camel Estuary

The Camel Estuary and its tributaries span over 600 hectares. It is a site of interest due to its diversity, including intertidal rock zones and mud and saltmarshes, as well as hosting several protected species, including the European eel, and wading birds. Near the mouth of the estuary are Padstow town (to the West) and Rock village (to the East). Five miles inland, Wadebridge town is located on the River Camel.

# About the artists 

Writer-director Xenia Glen and Antosh Wojcik, poet, drummer and cross-disciplinary artist are co-founders of the Dorset-based filmmakers’ collective [Sleepwalker Studios](https://www.sleepwalkerstudios.co.uk). Formed in 2017, Sleepwalker is also a production company, dedicated to producing subversive films that explore unusual stories inspired by real experiences. It has grown to include film creatives from across London, Dorset, Devon and beyond.

# About their commission

Their creative approach is community-centred filmmaking - a collaborative approach to filmmaking that involves local communities actively in the process of creating a film. This approach empowers local people to participate in decision-making, storytelling, and the technical aspects of production under Xenia and Anthosh's guidance. This creative approach promotes organic authentic representation, with the view to uplift underrepresented voices and stories. This is paramount to their practise. The filmmaking style, subject, and story is at the ideation stage and will be honed during the research and development phase involving the Camel Estuary community.

About their approach 

# Research and Development

Xenia and Antosh worked along the Camel Estuary engaging with local communities from Wadebridge, Rock, and Padstow, and examining the site’s ecological, historical, and social dynamics and learning its stories. 

They met with volunteers from Wadebridge Museum, talked to Becky Hughes (Senior Adviser on Landscapes and Nature Recovery Networks at Natural England), met with Dr Dan Bloomfield (Nature Recovery and Food Systems (UofE Penryn Campus) and spent time with Dan and other members of Cornwall Birds at Walmsley Sanctuary. They walked and explored the coast with James Scourse (Professor of Marine Science at the UofE). 

Xenia and Antosh returned to work with Prof Scourse and his team at their Penryn campus laboratory. They filtered sand samples they had collected along the Camel estuary, photographing and studying them under microscopes with varying strengths – with a crash course in foraminifera and silica. They also observed how shells record time, using both the conversations and the images captured to shape the final work.

## Ekphrastic Estuary 

Antosh and Xenia ran a two-hour online creative workshop, exploring some of the moving images from their work-in-progress film. Participants discussed process, ekphrasis (writing in response to visual art) and took part in writing exercises.

Antosh and Xenia ran a two-hour online creative sound design workshop. Participants could bring along their preferred DAW (digital audio workstation) like Audacity, Logic, Ableton.

# The Film

*Camel Before The Storm* is an experimental film that explores Cornwall’s Camel Estuary through spoken word, documentary interviews, and experimental landscape visuals featuring thermal imaging, infrared cinematography, scannography, microscope photography, and animation provided by a collaboration with Saskia Tomlinson. The work also centres around poetry created in response to community workshops and academic research.

# About the site: Challacombe Farm 
[Challacombe Farm](https://www.dartmoorfarm.com/) has a long history; it is recorded in the Doomsday Book, and appears in documents written in 1244 and 1303. Covering 200 hectares, it is both in the Dartmoor National Park and part of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate. Run by Naomi Oakley and Mark Owen, the couple apply sustainable farming practices, producing grass-fed and certified organic beef and lamb, “whilst conserving and enhancing the wildlife, landscape and archaeology that makes it such a special place.”

# About the artists

[Saili Katebe](https://theblissfulnomad.com/ "Saili Katebe") is a writer, performer and workshop facilitator often writing under the pen name The Blissful Nomad. Born in Zambia and now based in the South West of England, his work celebrates the musicality of language, the possibilities of performance and the power of storytelling. His work has been featured on BBC Arts and BBC Radio Bristol. 

[Richard Chappell](https://www.richardchappelldance.co.uk/ "Richard Chappell") is an internationally renowned choreographer who has led his own ensemble since 2013. Based between Wales and the South West of England, Richard’s creative process is rooted in collaboration, co-authorship and emotional connectivity. Richard loves to work in community settings, creating ambitious choreography for intergenerational community casts.  


About the artists

# Research and Development

Saili and Richard spent time talking to Mark and Naomi at Challacombe Farm about their conservation approach, with in-depth explorations of the protected site and what they valued about the farm.  This was twinned this with meetings with Dr Adrian Colston (Conservationist and Rural Social Scientist) to discuss his research on stakeholder attitudes to the varied conservation approaches on Dartmoor Commons, and with Ellie Jones (Archivist at Exeter Cathedral) to learn more about Anglo Saxon records of Challacombe. Through these they delved deeper into the environmental and historical stories of Challacombe. 

Saili and Richard collaborated with company dancer and climate activist Marla King to create interwoven poetry and movement performances responding to these stories.  

Returning as the seasons changed, the team walked among the different biodiverse precious habitats on the farm including trees, hay meadows, bogs, and ponds, collaboratively developing poetic and choreographic reflections that explored the abundance and unique spread of plants, insects, birds and moss found there. combining these with music from folk musician Ben Moss, the final work sensorially explored the landscape, images and textures of Challacombe Farm.

# Workshops

Between April – June 2025, Saili and Richard co-delivered poetry and dance workshops at Exeter Phoenix, the Moor Imagination Centre in Buckfastleigh and at Challacombe farm on Dartmoor.  

They supported a community cast of all ages, both new to and with experience of dance and poetry to create their own written and choreographed responses to the landscape. These workshops collected community responses to the sites and enabled the community cast to create their own work as part of the commission, performing alongside Saili, Richard and Marla both in the live performances at the end of the project and in the final film.

Collaborating with filmmaker Daniel Martin, the team captured the choreographed pieces of poetry and dance. The community cast, supported by RCD producers and choreography support, also worked with Daniel to film their responses. 

There were three public opportunities to experience this work live.  

- A site-specific walking performance at Challacombe Farm featuring the community cast as well as the artists. The piece invited audiences to move through the landscape, encountering poetry and dance as part of the journey.  

- A performance at the Moor Imagination Centre (MIC) in Buckfastleigh featuring Marla, including a new performance by dancer Charlie Fryer and live music from folk artist Ben Moss, and a cast of community dancers.  

- A performance at Exeter Green Phoenix Festival featuring Marla, the artists and members of the community cast.

In the spirit of the [gift of the Globe](https://news.exeter.ac.uk/university/cornwall-campuses/national-art-project-comes-to-cornwall-with-gifting-of-symbolic-globe-for-the-penryn-campus/) given to University of Exeter by [The World Reimagined](https://www.theworldreimagined.org/) and the University’s commitment to acknowledge the history, legacy and future of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans, combined with Arts and Culture’s desire to confront and counter structural and institutional racism in Britain while acknowledging intersectionality, we have devised *Reimaginings*.

*Reimaginings* gives space to five female mixed-heritage Cornwall-based artists to forge a deepening connection to each other and their own individual practice - to get some space to research, reflect, and experiment. These artists, in varying ways and disciplines, work with ancestral and indigenous knowledges, and autoethnographic narratives of diasporic identity. Navigating the fictional and archival historical presence of people of African descent in Europe, through creative spiritual practices connecting to land, elements and materials of the more-than-human world.

## Maria Christoforidou

Maria Christoforidou  is a Zambian Greek artist, writer and Fine Art lecturer at Falmouth University. Listening to the body and 'speaking near by' archives or ancestors, Maria is motivated by a hope to create pauses that allow minor stories and more than human comrades to evade classification, come to rest, undoing unspeakable knots of otherness.

## Caroline Deeds

Caroline Deeds is a Ghanaian/British filmmaker, artist and lecturer based in West Cornwall. Her work focuses on creative non-fiction and on visual explorations of the gaps and the stories left out of dominant narratives. Her films are informed from a position of unknowing and incompleteness.  Inspired by Sadiya Hartman’s term critical fabulations, she is motivated by a re-ordering of knowledge from the perspective of personal and imaginative narratives and representation from and about the African continent in the African diaspora.  She directed Walking Backwards (2004, Timberland Prize, Milan International African Asian and Latin American Film Festival, Shortlisted Jerwood Newcomers Award Sheffield), a poetic meditation on the Apollo 11 Moon landing, explored from the experience of fishermen, kenkey sellers and family from a newly emerging independent Ghana. She was selected as an Emerging Producer, Jihlava 2016 and selected for the Cornwall Workshop, 2022.  

Caroline Deeds

## Catherine Lucktaylor 
Catherine Lucktaylor is a ceramic artist whose hand-formed Raku ceramics reflect a harmonious fusion of her African ancestry and the untamed beauty of Cornwall. With a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from Wolverhampton University and decades of experience, Catherine’s work is steeped in both traditional and contemporary influences. Her artistic journey has been shaped by significant milestones, including a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travelling Fellowship, which took her to West Africa and Brazil to explore sacred art and reconnect with her Ghanaian heritage. This transformative experience deepened her creative voice, inspiring works that evoke a sense of ritual, connection, and healing. 

Now based in Cornwall, Catherine has established a rural studio near Penzance, where she creates vibrant Raku ceramics.  Her practice has evolved to incorporate Ancestral Lineage Healing, hosting retreats and rituals that weave together creativity, spirituality, and the profound wisdom of ancestral connection. Through her art and healing practice, Catherine invites others to explore their own stories, reconnect with their roots, and embrace the transformative power of creativity.

## Angeline Morrison
Angeline Morrison is a folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who approaches the traditional music, dance and folklore of Britain with a deep respect and curiosity, and a focus on Old Wyrd Albion and our hidden diasporic ancestors. Angeline's 2022 album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (Topic Records) was voted The Guardian's Folk Album of the Year.  Angeline's music is informed by her deep releationships with nature, the cosmos, the invisible, and the ancestors. Recently named as one of MOJO's 'voices bringing folk into the future', Angeline has performed on BBC 2's Later with Jools Holland and also played solo on the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

Between February 2024 and March 2025, artist Georgia Gendall and creative producers Field Notes brought together staff, students and artists at the University of Exeter's Cornwall Penryn campus, to curate and develop a programme of creative activity exploring a sense of belonging to place.

Tender Acts Final Film 

# About the Project
The original title of the commission was 'Civic Joy'. At the start of the commission Cat and Georgia spent time in trying to unravel what that might mean and began to think about what it means to have a sense of belonging within a place, a sense of ownership over it and a sense of responsibility for it. Their first (and very broad) conclusion is that many layers of connection are needed to create this. You can watch a short extract from the documentary film below to understand more about how Cat and Georgia took the brief forward in thsoe early stages.

Developing the brief 

# Poster Artwork Campaign 

Developed at the start of the commission, these artworks, which took the form of posters, were designed by Georgia Gendall and put up throughout the Penryn campus including the library, sport facilities, Student Union and teaching spaces. They instructed passers by enact a simple act e.g. 'lie down', 'lean' or 'walk on the grass' as a way to get people to think about and interact with their environment in a different way. Cat and Georgia share more about them in the below video.

Tender Acts Posters 

# Instruct a Tender Act 

During the first half of the project, the Tender Acts teams invited staff and students on the campus to create their own set of instructions, for someone else to interpret and enact. The forms were available to fill in online or in paper across the campus and offered staff and students the opportunity to connect and share a different way of looking at things, on occasions drawing attention to something on campus, or to disrupting every day ways of looking at things. 

We began our commission by inviting and instigating a series of ‘Tender Acts’: acts which invite curious exploration of the campus and ideas and acts which invite exchange between people who might not otherwise meet. 

This came together in two ways. Firstly the invitation to submit a set of instructions for someone else to interpret and enact, and to take instructions in return with the commitment to follow through on the exchange, sharing the results with your anonymous co-conspirators and possibly with us too. 

Secondly, they asked a variety of artists to instigate a series of ‘Collective Actions’ – opportunities to do something intriguing, in company and without the aim of producing a fixed outcome.

## There's a bird in that square 

A collective action on the Penryn campus, 25 April 2024. Bringing together students and staff, artist Bronwen Buckeridge guided participants through a fascinating sound mapping activity using chalk to create a series of listening lines across part of the campus, allowing participants to tune into the environment around them.

# Collective Action 2 

## Sing Out a Rope 

On Wednesday 8th May 2024 artist Rhys Morgan came to the Penryn Campus for 'Sing out a rope'. He shared songs from his project, *Seaweed in the Fruit Locker*, a series of performances by an LGBTQIA+ sea shanty choir who were formed by Morgan to explore collective performance in marginalised communities through the tradition of shanty singing. Since forming, the choir have been writing and performing sea shanties from a contemporary queer perspective, as well as exploring and re-writing traditional shanties. 

The collective action offered an opportunity for staff and students to sing together but also create their own sea shanty's based on the city of Falmouth which were performed by Rhys at the end of the session.

## Going, Going - A Guided Wander 

On 15th May 2024, artist and choreographer Kyra Norman led a guided wander around the Penryn campus. Bringing together staff and students, Kyra guided participants around different locations on the Penryn campus encouraging them to connect with their surroundings and reflect on questions such as "what makes us human?", "how does movement connect us?",  "what keeps us going?" and "what happens when we stop?"

## PULP 

On 29th May 2024 artist Ben Sanderson led a collective action to reprocess collective pulp into hand-made paper. Taking place in beautiful surroundings of the walled garden on the Penryn campus, Ben led participants in the techniques of pulping and paper making. Throughout the day he was joined by staff and students from both institutions along with prospective students and their families who were at Penryn for an open day.

 # *Shh... a silent disco* 

On Wednesday 26 March 2025, the Tender Acts team created a silent disco like no other at the Penryn campus library, where 80+ participants turned up to tune into the unnoticed rhythms that shape the everyday soundscape of campus. 

Members of the SU Birdwatching Society, Life Drawing Society, Anime & Manga Society, Rugby Ladies, and Puppetry collaborated with artists Georgia Gendall, Naomi Frears, and Liam Jolly to capture the hidden beats and rhythms of campus life. The sounds they created and recorded were then developed into the set list for the silent disco which encouraged listeners to experience and hear the unique sounds of the Penryn campus in a whole new way.

# About Georgia Gendall 
Georgia Gendall’s practice is rooted in the rural landscape of Cornwall – where she grew up and now lives and works – Georgia uses event structures, sculptures, performance, video and social practice to bring people together through multi-sensory encounters that focus on how the art intervention can draw attention to, subvert, celebrate or disrupt a context to embody queerness and unravel our preconceptions of the rural as idyll. She runs The Allotment Club: a project and residency space on an allotment in Penryn, Cornwall, which hosts local and national artists, and a programme of workshops and events. She is the artist instigator and organiser of the annual Falmouth Worm Charming Championships.

Field Notes is the curatorial practice of Cat Bagg and Rosie Allen, manifested as a small organisation with the capacity to leverage funding and support for artists and audiences. Field Notes supports artists to explore extraordinary ideas in unexpected locations; creating new environments for discovery, challenge, celebration and collaboration. Each project focuses on a particular place, unearthing layers of history, ecology, community and folklore – almost always in Cornwall, which has become the principal subject of Field Notes’s work as well as their main site of activity.

# About Tomorrow's Warriors   
[Tomorrow's Warriors](https://tomorrowswarriors.org/) is a jazz music education and artist development organisation that was co-founded in 1991 by Janine Irons and Gary Crosby. Their mission is to inspire, foster and grow a vibrant community of artists, audiences and leaders who together will transform the lives of future generations by increasing opportunity, diversity and excellence in and through jazz.

Led by Tomorrow's Warriors *Musical Passage* brings together Arts and Culture, University of Exeter, [Radical Ecology](https://www.radicalecology.earth/), [the Eden Project](https://www.edenproject.com/), [The Box, Plymouth](https://www.theboxplymouth.com/), [Asone Perform](https://asoneperform.com/), [Plymouth Youth Music Service](https://www.plymouthmeh.com/), [Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs](https://www.musiceducationhub.org/site/) and [Leskyn Kernow](https://www.minack.com/whats-on/leskyn-kernow), for a project that aims to support the long-term development of a cohesive infrastructure for anti-racist jazz education across Devon and Cornwall, encompassing: 

- Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for music teachers   
- Jazz workshops in schools for students   
- The establishment of a regular jam session for jazz enthusiasts of different ages and levels   
- The consolidation of a live performance touring network of venues across the region

# Developing the Regional Network of Jazz Music Teachers   

Drawing on Tomorrow’s Warriors expertise as the UK’s leading provider of free-at-the-point-of-delivery jazz education for young people, Radical Ecology will work with partners across Devon and Cornwall to identify a network of 12-20 music teachers across the region, covering Plymouth, Redruth, Bodmin, St Ives, Totnes, Torbay, St Austell, Sidmouth & Exeter.

The selected group of teachers will in turn be invited to serve as the project’s core community:

1. Working directly with TW musicians in CPD settings
2. Hosting Tomorrow's Warriors at local schools to support the delivery by TW of jazz workshops for students
3. Leading on the delivery of regular, funded jam sessions that will move across the project’s geographical area to support the ongoing connectivity and participation of the teacher-participant cohort whilst also providing a point of contact and engagement for emerging musicians in each location. 

The aim is that through the relationship with Tomorrow’s Warriors, the cohort will emerge as an autonomous network, active in and across the region whilst also connected through TW with the leading edge of the UK youth jazz scene. 


Developing the regional 

# Developing Regional Audience for Jazz 

The jam sessions will be organised to lead into a live performance by visiting Tomorrow's Warriors musicians, both taking place at venues in the area where the CPD and schools workshops have happened. This will create an opportunity to develop audiences for jazz in each of the locations where we are working and, taken together, will establish a network of partner venues that can support touring schedules for Tomorrow's Warriors and other related talent looking for opportunities to explore the viability of additional dates across South-West England.
